Estudiant de doctorat al Departament de Geografia Física i Ciències de l’Ecosistema a la Universitat de Lund, Suècia.

Sovint la paraula ‘’geografia’’ s’associa d’una forma força simplista a la distribució espacial dels elements que estructuren el medi físic de la terra, així com a l’organització i distribució de les estructures humanes sobre el territori. Si bé és cert que aquests són elements geogràfics, la geografia és una ciència que va molt més enllà.

‘’Quina funció exerceix cadascun dels elements del medi (relleu, hidrologia, vegetació, sòl, fauna...) sobre la Terra? Com estan interrelacionats? Quina influència tenim els éssers humans sobre l’espai que ocupem a escala local, regional o global? De quina forma podem disminuir la nostra petjada al planeta?’’ Aquestes són solament algunes de les preguntes a les que la Geografia pretén donar resposta, i és la cerca d’aquestes respostes les que, personalment, em van portar a cursar el grau de Geografia i Ordenació del Territori a la URV.

El Grau, doncs, em va proporcionar coneixements molt rellevants sobre aquestes temàtiques i sobre moltes altres, que em van permetre entendre el sistema Terra d’una forma holística.

Els estudis de Grau em van permetre dur a terme una estada a la Universitat de Göteborg (Suècia) cursant la menció en canvi climàtic i sostenibilitat, on vaig cursar assignatures i vaig realitzar unes pràctiques. Durant aquest període vaig estudiar en profunditat molts processos mediambientals que succeeixen a altes latituds tant de forma natural com induïda per l’ésser humà. La profunda importància que aquests processos tenen a nivell global, a una escala temporal força curta, em va impactar especialment.

En acabar els estudis de Grau vaig cursar el Màster en Anàlisi i Gestió del Territori: Planificació, Governança i Lideratge territorial a la mateixa URV. Aquests estudis em van permetre entendre millor el desenvolupament de la societat sobre l’espai i la seva interacció amb el medi. No obstant, marcat per l’enorme influència dels ambients polars en el clima global, vaig decidir aprofundir més en aquesta temàtica cursant un Màster en Glaciologia i Ambients Polars a la Universitat d’Estocolm.

La voluntat de contribuir en el coneixement científic i en la seva divulgació m’han portar a cursar un doctorat a la Universitat de Lund. En aquest projecte, que pretén millorar les prediccions sobre els efectes del canvi climàtic en ecosistemes polars, tots els coneixements i eines que la URV i la SU m’han proporcionat seran essencials.

Often the word "geography" is quite simply associated with the spatial distribution of the elements that structure the physical environment of the earth, as well as with the organization and distribution of human structures in the territory. While it is true that these are geographic elements, geography is a science that goes much further.

'' What role does each of the elements of the environment (relief, hydrology, vegetation, soil, fauna ...) play on the Earth? How are they interrelated? What influence do human beings have on the spaces that we occupy at local, regional or global levels? How can we reduce our footprint on the planet? '' These are just some of the questions that Geography tries to answer, and it is the search for these answers which led me to take the Degree in Geography and Spatial Planning at the URV.The degree course provided me with highly relevant knowledge of these issues and many others, which together have given me a holistic understanding of the Earth system.

As part of the course, I was able to undertake a study visit at the University of Göteborg (Sweden), where I attended classes on Climate Change and Sustainability and other subjects and undertook internships. During this period I studied in depth many environmental processes that occur at high latitudes both naturally and as a result of human activity. The profound effect that these processes have on a global level over very short time scale had a particularly strong impact on me.

When I finished my degree course, I studied the Master's Degree in Territorial Analysis and Management: Planning, Governance, and Territorial Leadership at the URV. This course gave me a better understanding of the development of society in a given space and its interaction with the environment. However, my particular interest lies in the enormous influence that polar environments have on the global climate, and so I decided to pursue this subject by taking a Master’s Degree in Glaciology and Polar Environments at the University of Stockholm (US).

The desire to help to generate and spread scientific knowledge have led me to pursue a doctorate at the University of Lund. During this project, which aims to improve predictions of the effects of climate change on polar ecosystems, all the knowledge and tools that the URV and the US have given me will be essential.
