GEOTOURV Talks "Tourism and geopolitics in North Korea"

9th february 2017

Seminar “Tourism and geopolitics in North Korea”
Invited speaker:  Alejandro Cao de Benós, special delegate of the committee for cultural relations, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea

It will take place at the Aula Magna of the Faculty of Tourism and Geography, from 5 to 7pm on February 9th.

• What moves a socialist country to open up to tourism? How does it fit with the political principles, value system and discourses of that country? What is expected from the growth of tourism activity in the country?
• How is tourism organised and controlled? How do tourists react to the very unusual way in which they approach this peculiar cultural and political landscape?
• What is the profile of a tourist in North Korea?
• What is the room for opening up on other fronts, such as international relations in research and education?

URV offers its students a unique opportunity to learn about all that from the only authorised ‘spokesperson’ of the Government of North Korea abroad, the Tarragona-born Alejandro Cao de Benós, and to debate freely on those topics and more in general on the political idiosyncrasy represented by North Korea in the contemporary world.

This seminar is included in the GEOTOURVTalks lecture series and is also part of the subject Topics in Geography of the degree in Geography and Spatial Planning study plan. It is open to the entire university community before sending an email to jordi.blay@urv.cat.
