The first Geography Olympics of Tarragona took place at the Faculty of Tourism and Geography of the Universitat Rovira i Virgili on 14th March 2013. This event, organized jointly by the Department of Geography and the Association of Geographers, is designed for students in their final year of secondary education from the university district of Tarragona. The event is the local phase of the 4th National Geography Olympics, organized by the Association of Geographers (http://olimpiadas.geografos.org/).
Sixty students from ten different schools took part. The winner of the first prize was Andrei Ioan Boar, from the Escola Puigcerver in Reus. The second and the third prize went to Gaspar Caparó, from the IES Fonts del Glorieta in Alcover, and Aleix Bertomeu, from the IES Joaquim Bau in Tortosa. The IES Joaquim Bau in Tortosa was also the school that had the best grade point average. The prizes were endowed by the Faculty of Tourism and Geography and its partner the Cartographic Institute of Catalonia. In addition, the three prize-winning students will receive funding from the Department of Geography if they finally enroll in the degree of Geography and Spatial Planning next academic year.
These three students will compete in the state-wide phase which will take place on 13 and 14 April in Madrid.
